Hannah Ahern was born about 1857 at Terre Haute, Indiana. Her parents, who were both natives of County Kerry, Ireland, were Maurice Ahern and Ellen Barrett. The Aherns moved to Iowa when Hannah was still an infant, making their home at Dubuque.

Hannah married Irish-born Patrick Casserly in 1882. They spent their married life in Dubuque, where they had five children - three daughters and two sons. One of their sons died as an infant.

Hannah died at Dubuque on March 8, 1920. Funeral services were held at the Catholic cathedral in Dubuque and burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery south of the city. She was survived by her husband and four children: Mary (Ready), Ellen (Hennessey), Kathryn (Garbelman) and Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, John, Maurice and Robert.
