Clara was born in Kansas because her father was stationed there while in the army. Family stories say she was bounced on General Custer's knee as a baby.

After her father retired from the army, the family moved to Brooklyn, NY where Clara met her husband. They married on Oct 8, 1890.

By 1910, she had given birth to eight children, only six of whom were still living. She had a ninth child the same year.
