George E. Abels, age 86, of Norwalk and formerly of Akron, died Wednesday, January 07, 2015 at Fisher-Titus Medical Center.
He was born August 8, 1928 in Akron to the late Roy and Ruth (Carmichael) Abels. He was a graduate of Ellet High School in Akron. He was the owner of Abels Hardware and Supply in Akron, also worked at J.P. Loomis in Akron from 1963 until 1972, then moving to Florida where he retired from Rinker Materials in Hollywood, FL in 1991. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a past-member of the Mike Volkers Wednesday wood carving class. He was active playing golf at Sycamore Hills in the Golden Oldies Golf Group, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council, Akron, OH Charles Reymann Council 4664.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Massey) Abels of Norwalk; children, James (Cheryl) Abels of Akron, William (Patricia) Abels of Akron, Ruthann (Dennis) Foltz of Norwalk and Georganne (Russ) Hayson of Hollywood, FL; grandchildren, William, Sharla, Lynn, Andrena, Laura, Brenda, Patrick, Carly, Kelly and Erin; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, James P. (Mary Lou) Massey of Cuyahoga Falls; sister-in-law, Loretta Gavin of Pittsburgh, PA.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara K. Reth.
Friends may call on Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 1322 Settlement Road, Peru. The Rev. William Pifher, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
