After his father died in 1763, Richard must have inherited some land. In 1764, Richard sold 100 acres of this land to Thomas Moore.

In 1820, Richard listed the following slaves in Amelia County, VA:
3 males, 10 years of age and under;
1 male 10-16 years;
2 males 16-26 years;
1 male 26-45 years;
1 male 45+:
2 females 10 and under;
2 females 10-16;
2 females 26-45;
1 female 45+.

In Tazwell County, VA on 29 April 1783, Richard had 130 acres on both sides of the North Fork of the Holstein River and a Treasury Warrant beginning on a spur of Pine Mountain of John Simmons Tract in Tazwell Co, VA in 1781, on the south side of Little Mountain on Turkey Gap Creek, 28 acres North Fork of Holstein River to the Corner of Belcher's former survey.

William served in the revolutionary war at Annapolis Maryland, 4th regimen with brother Benjamin: William enlisted 5 Oct 1775 for duration of war: Was on roll call 13 Oct 1781
