Rufus Allison McCurdy was born on April 27, 1873 in Marshall County, Tennessee, the son of James Burr McCurdy (1851-1925) and Mary Amanda Adelaide (Tucker) McCurdy (1852–1901). [NOTE: Although his Death Certificate lists his birth year as 1875, his much earlier 1918 World War I Draft Registration Card has it as 1873.]

A veteran of the Spanish American War, Rufus was married 1st about 1905 to Georgia Draffen (1883-1916), the daughter of William H Draffen (1851–1920) and Julia Ann (Derrington) Draffen (1861–1938). After Georgia died, Rufus was married as the 2nd husband of Georgia's sister Lillie May (Draffen) Reaves (1879–1954). Lillie had been married 1st to Richard Lee Reaves, and they were divorced about 1909.

A mortician and embalmer living at 321 South 6th Street, Mayfield, Kentucky, Rufus was 72 years old when he died suddenly at home of a heart attack on October 19, 1947. Burial was two days later in Maplewood Cemetery.
