Raymond Earnest Heflin, 73, of Luray passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was born January 21, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late John Thomas Heflin, Jr. and the late Ethel B. Heflin.
Mr. Heflin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served for four years on the USS Sarsfield out of Key West. During that time he assisted in the recovery of the space capsule of astronaut Allen Shepherd. He was a member of Jeffersonton Baptist Church.
He worked as a surveyor for Arlington County and as an insurance agent for several different companies, later forming his own agency, the Ray Heflin Insurance Agency. He was also a real estate agent for Countryside Properties. He operated Poplar Corner Store with his brother, John Heflin, and Jeffersonton General Store with his wife, Lorraine, until it was destroyed by fire. He retired as a truck driver from Merchant Tire of Manassas.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor Lorraine Heflin. Additional survivors include three children: Sharon Dovell of Jeffersonton, Raymond Heflin, Jr. of Front Royal, and Susan Grubb of Madison. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Jeffersonton Baptist Church with Pastor Marshall Braylo officiating.
Interment will follow in Jeffersonton Baptist Church Cemetery.
The great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
