Wife of Herbert Arnold Lange; mother of Melvin; grandmother of Wade and Scott.
"Elk Horn Community History", Elk Horn, IA, 2000, p. 444:
" Herbert Lange was born on a farm west of Elk Horn on January 2, 1906, one of 11 children born to Johannes and Karen (Petersen) Lange. He attended rural school, but because he and his brothers were needed to work at home, they only were able to attend school every other year.

After growing to manhood, he worked as a farmhand for local farmers, and on
Lillian was born in Rorbeck on August 9, 1917, the daughter of Chris and Magda (Jensen) Andersen. She attended Clay Township No. 4 school, where she completed the 8th grade.

Lillian's father was the storekeeper at the Rorbeck General store, where Lillian worked. In 1939, upon her father's death, she and her brother, Milo, took over the operation of the store until the early 1940's, when the store was closed.

On November 2, 1944, a son, Melvin Durwood, was born to Herb and Lillian.

Because of Herb's problems with asthma, in 1945, the Lange family decided to move to a drier climate. For nearly a year, they traveled through the southwest, seeking relieve from his lung problems. Because of difficulty in finding work, they moved back to the Elk Horn area in 1946 and started farming southwest of Elk Horn.

In 1951, the Langes purchased a farm northeast of Kimballton where they farmed for 16 years. In addition to farming, Herb worked with the local undertakers digging burial graves. Unlike today, at that time, grave digging was very hard work. there were no backhoes or mechanical devices, just a sharp spade and a good technique. Rain or snow, winter or summer, armed only with his spade (in the winter his pickax) and his old Jeep, Herb could be depended upon to get the job done.

During their years on the farm, Lillian worked at the Salem Lutheran Retirement Home.

Their farming came to an end in 1967, when Herb was involved in a serious tractor accident. At that time, they purchased a home and moved to Elk Horn where Lillian continued to work at the Retirement Home and Herb began working for Delbert Rasmussen.

On July 3, 1983, Herb passed away. Lillian continued to live in their home for several years, until she moved to the Senior Citizen Housing in Elk Horn. During her later years, Lillian was very active in the Shelby County State Bank Commanders Club and the Senior Citizen Meal Site in Elk Horn.

Lillian passed away suddenly at her home on October 9, 1995."
