Adelaide Bernice Marsh Spencer
October 5, 1917 - January 10, 2015

Adelaide Spencer died on January 10, 2015 in Portland after several months of illness, with her devoted caregivers by her side.

Mrs. Spencer was born in Beaverton on October 5, 1917, the daughter of Mills and Martha Marsh. The family moved to Noti in 1922, and she lived in the Noti/Elmira area for almost all of her life. Her grandparents, Isaac and Rosa Torrence also lived near Noti for many years, and Torrence Road was named for them. Her father was woods foreman for the Forcia and Larsen Lumber Company at Noti from 1923 until 1946. She attended Noti Grade School, and graduated from Elmira Union High School in 1935.

The daughter and granddaughter of Oregon loggers, she married another logger, Richard Junior "Dick" Spencer, in 1941. The marriage lasted for nearly 74 years. Adelaide and Dick were devoted to one another, to their children and extended family, and to many church and community activities. She was a volunteer for the Civilian Ground Observer Corps during World War II, a room mother and Parent-Teachers Club officer for Elmira Elementary School, and was an active member of Valley United Methodist Church in Veneta since its founding in 1959.

Adelaide was also a homemaker, an avid fisherman, and vegetable gardener. She will be fondly remembered by many friends, family members and neighbors.

She is survived by her husband Dick, daughter Anne of Alexandria, Virginia, son David of Portland, son-in-law Jerry Petty, and grandsons Chris Caputo and Jack Spencer. She is also survived by her sister Mary Gowing of Eugene, brother Norman Marsh of Salem, and many nieces, nephews (also grand-neices and grand-nephews) in the Eugene, Salem and Portland areas. Preceding her in death were her sister Priscilla Bowman and brother Bruce Marsh.
