John Cooney was born in Cork, Ireland on 9 Mar 1762. In 1784, at the age of 22, he left Ireland with his family for the Colonies, arriving in Alexandria, Virginia on 31 Jul 1784. He met Mildred "Millie" Edmunds, the daughter of a wealthy land owner. They married in Amherst County, Virginia on 27 Jun 1789.
Six children were born of this marriage: James, Terrance, Mary Ann, Sophia, Pamelia and John.
John fought in the War of 1812 and died in the Becton section of Barren County.
