He was married to Nancy Jane Oxford Bird and after her death he married Lucy Ann Way Sawdey Cromwell Bird (8 Mar 1913) who is buried at the Iowa Soldier's Home in Marshalltown where Mr. Bird died.

HAMPTON VETERAN DEAD..ROBERT L. BIRD succumbs to Neutritus at Soldier's home.

Neutritus caused the death of Robert L Bird, age 70, a veteran of the civil war at the soldiers' home, at 1:30 this afternoon. Bird had been a member of the home since Feb 27, 1906, when he entered from this city. He was a native of Holmes county, Illinois, where he was born Aug 22, 1844. He enlisted in Company E Twelfth Iowa infantry, Oct 1, 1861, at Butler Center and was discharged Jan 20, 1866, at Memphis Tennessee.

His wife Mrs. Lucy A Bird, is a member of the home. Two Daughters and one son survived him. They are Mesdames Maud Kline and Grace Hamilton, and David Bird, all of Hampton. The body will be sent to Hampton, Tuesday morning.
