Charles Wayne Britton was born August 3, 1930. He was reared in Kingfisher, Oklahoma by Lenore Ketch Britton, a school teacher and homemaker, and Roy Britton, a dairyman, farmer, and rancher.
His maternal grandfather, Charles S. Ketch, made the Run into Unassigned Lands on April 22, 1889 at the age of 21, and settled near Kingfisher, where he prospered as a farmer and rancher. His paternal grandfather, John M Britton, came to Oklahoma, in 1901 and later established the Britton Dairy at Kingfisher.
Charles graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA degree in political science and history and a Law degree. He was a life member of University of Oklahoma Alumni Association, member of Oklahoma Foundation and Sooner Club. Charles was an avid Sooner football fan and attended most games until he was 84 years old.
He served in United States Air Force from 1953 until 1957, as a navigator and radar observer with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was stationed overseas at Thule AFB, Greenland.
He retired from Maryland Casualty Insurance Group (now Zurich Insurance Group) after 34 years, serving as a Regional Claim Manager.
He was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, serving on and chairing numerous committees and boards and teaching Sunday school and history classes.
Charles was active in and honored by many organizations, including Sons of the American Revolution, the Oklahoma City/County Historical Society Society (Distinguished Service Award 2008), the Oklahoma Legion Boys State, the Oklahoma Historical Society, as well as numerous others.
We will remember and miss Charles’ sense of civic duty and community involvement, his ready smile and his friendliness. Charles is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at t. Luke's United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Kingfisher Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home.
