George P. Schwartz Jr., 71, Hazleton-Berwick Highway, Conyngham, a retired supervisor of music in the Hazleton Area School District, died unexpectedly at 8:25 p.m. Saturday while en route home from the first session of the Spring Reunion of Lehigh Consistory of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Masons in Allentown...

Schwartz, a native of Hazleton and a son of the late George P. and Mary (Sechler) Schwartz, retired in 1967 after having taught in the district since 1924. He was born May 25, 1902. Besides his distinguished career in the Hazleton Area School District, he served as organist and choir director at the First United Presbyterian Church, this city, for 50 years. He was also recognized as the organizer and director of the first Handbell Choir in the area. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, this city; of Azalea Lodge, 687, Free and Accepted Masons; Lehigh Consistory of 32 degree Scottish Rite Masons, Allentown; the Craftsman's Club, this city; Irem Temple Shrine, Wilkes-Barre; Music Educators National Conference, and various retired teachers' associations. He was graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College and Susquehanna University. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife, the former Fernley Hildebrand; one daughter, Mrs. B. F. (Mary Louise) Davis, Oakland, Calif.; one brother, James S. Schwartz, Bethlehem, and one niece. Several cousins also survive.

Private funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Rosenstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald W. Ealy, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, this city, officiating. Interment will be in the Vine Street Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The family requests memorials be sent to the Memorial Fund of the First United Presbyterian Church.
