He was a veteran of WWII, having served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as a bodyguard to the Admiral aboard the USS Wyoming for 18 months during the war. He was a rifle instructor at Parris Island, S.C. and was an expert rifleman. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Henrietta Howard; daughter, Shenley; sons, Keith and Kent Back; grand-children; extended family. Entombment at Forrest Mausoleum.
