Anna Maria Widmer Suko was born in Vittenberg, Bessarabia (in modern-day southwest Ukraine) to Jacob Widmer and Dorothy Finkbeiner, one of 12 children.

She married Ferdinand Suko in November 1892 when she was 21. The family farmed near Tarutino, then emigrated to the United States in 1902.
