He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and had completed one year of Harvard Business School, when he was called into the army in June of 1941. Most of his overseas military service was in England. Returning from the war in 1945, he entered the family business, which was founded by his father and grandfather in 1877.
He served as general manager of the Gibbes Machinery Company until the company was dissolved. He was a member and past president of Forest Lake Club, The Columbia Cotillion Club, The S.C., Automobile Dealer's Association, and Historic Columbia Foundation. He served on the School Board of Richland County District One from 1961-1971, as an appointee of the Columbia Academy. Mr. Gibbes was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Congaree; The Forum, The Lower Richland Society, and White Pond. He was also very proud of being an Eagle Scout. He was a supporter and benefactor of numerous organizations dedicated to historical or natural preservation, including The Congaree Land Trust; the Nature Conservancy, Caroliniana and The State Museum. He received several awards in appreciation of his land stewardship.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Davies Gibbes; daughters, Margaret Gibbes Jackson (Mrs. Joseph P. Jackson, Jr.) and Caroline Gibbes Crosswell (Mrs. William F. Crosswell); a son, Alexander Mason Gibbes, Jr. (wife, Ann Lane Gibbes) and five grandchildren, Joseph Porter Jackson, III, Sarah Gibbes Crosswell, William Fort Crosswell, Jr., Elizabeth Davies Gibbes and Robert Lane Gibbes. He was predeceased by four sisters and a brother. The family will receive friends at the residence at 3420 Heatherwood Road, from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2007. www.dunbarfunerals.com
