Thomas Donald Barry
1936 - 2014

Thomas Donald Barry died peacefully on April 6, 2014 at his home in Warren, CT, a special place where all were welcome.

He was born in Minneapolis on June 25, 1936 and grew up in Wayzata, MN.

Tom attended Blake School in Hopkins, MN and Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, OH and graduated from Portsmouth Priory in Portsmouth, RI in June 1954.

He continued on to Princeton University, where he graduated class of 1958 with a BA in English literature and was a member of the Ivy Club.

He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Walter R. and Geraldine Dunne Barry, and his brother, Edward Barry.

He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Peter) Houghton and brother, Walter (Jane) Barry, Jr., many nieces and nephews, and his former wife Judith Woracek Mullen.

Judith and Tom had lunch together in New York City the week he died.

Tom loved the written and spoken word, and was a writer all his life. He wrote feature articles in Look magazine and other publications. Among many notable pieces was "How I Stowed Away on the Queen Mary from New York to London."

His creativity extended to the film he made reflecting his love of the rails: "Last Train to Pittsfield."

Finally, Tom loved the piano. His favorite piece was the marching ballad "In the East... and in the West..."

Tom was a wonderful human being. He moved in all worlds and related to people from all walks of life.

A close friend sent this note. It speaks for all of us:

"Tom had these qualities: intellect without pride; kindness without embarrassment; friendship without reservation; values without apology; and the best definition of humanity. I will miss him for a long time to come."

There will be a Mass for Tom in Minnesota in late May, after which he will be laid to rest in the family burial plot next to his parents and brother.
