Sister Sylvester McVey, O.P.
AKA-Jenny Rose McVey
A Dominican Sister of San Rafael for 61 years, died peacefully at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent on January 14 at the age of 92.
Jenny Rose McVey was part of a large extended family and grew up in Eagle Rock in southern California. She attended St. Dominic School where she was a child who learned easily and was an avid reader. Jenny Rose attended Holy Family High School in Glendale and Pasadena Junior College before joining the work force.
She did clerical work for the City of Los Angeles and claims adjusting for the State Compensation Insurance Fund. After World War II, Jenny Rose completed her last two years of college at UCLA. Her professional life led her to Pacific Bell and then a job at Fireman?s Fund in San Francisco. She found a young people?s group at Old St. Mary?s Cathedral and enjoyed an active social life, but something in her soul was restless. In 1953 she entered the convent in San Rafael.
For twenty-two years Sister Sylvester ministered in education, at Dominican Convent Lower School in San Rafael, at St. Cyril School in Oakland, and at St. Dominic School in Los Angeles. In 1976 she studied accounting at Pasadena City College and came north to serve in the business office of San Domenico School in San Anselmo; she served as Chief Financial Officer until 1989. Sister Sylvester?s next contribution was as Business Manager of Santa Sabina Retreat Center in San Rafael for sixteen years. Declining health led her to move to Our Lady of Lourdes Convent in 2005 where she had more time for reading and praying.
Sister Sylvester is survived by her cousin, George Jones and his wife, Joyce Ann, and by her Dominican sisters.
A funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, January 20 in the chapel at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent, 77 Locust Avenue in San Rafael at 11:00 a.m. Following a reception, Sister Sylvester will be buried in St. Dominic Cemetery in Benicia.
