Johann Adam Grauer was born in 1830 in the small village of Mähringen, Württemberg, Germany, in what is now the state of Baden-Württemberg. He emigrated from Germany in 1833 with his parents and two sisters. One of the sisters died and was buried at sea. The surviving sister was Anna Katharina Grauer.

The family settled in Niagara County, and Johann Adam Grauer subsequently used the name Adam J. Grauer. He married Mary Elizabeth Shafer in Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, NY, on Dec. 17, 1857. They had two children, but Mary died in 1861, and was interred in the family plot at Witmer Cemetery.

Adam married Emily Kline in Lewiston, Niagara County, NY Sept. 29, 1862. They had six children.

Adam J. Grauer was originally buried in Witmer Cemetery. However, in 1930, after the death of Emily Kline Grauer, Adam was re-interred with Emily at Riverdale. The Grauer family plot at Riverdale includes a grave marker for Mary, but as Riverdale has no record for re-interment of Mary, it is presumed that she is still interred at Witmer.
