Mary E. Harnden was the daughter of Zedoc Theodore Harnden b. May 19, 1845, d. Nov. 27,1921 and Margaret J. Plum b. July 18, 1848, d. March 12, 1907.

Zedoc and his family lived in Polk Twp, Wapello Co. IA, when the 1870 census was taken. The family moved to Beacon, Mahaska Co, IA, soon after Mary E. was born. In 1880, they were living in Hickory Grove, Monroe Co. IA.

Mary E. married John Henry Beadle Aug. 16, 1890, in Beacon, Mahaska Co, IA. They had two daughters, Ida Pearl and Anna Delores. They later divorced.

In 1895, Mary E. married Joseph William Whitson. At this time, Mary E. was a resident of Muchakinock, IA. This was a mining company town just across the Monroe County line near Buxton, IA. Mary ran a tavern and boarding house.

After their marriage, Mary E. and Joseph W. initially lived in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co, IA, and later moved to Davenport, Scott Co, IA.

Joseph W. was a brother to the husband of Mary Elizabeths's sister, Minnie.

Mary E. and Joseph W. had 7 children, Edwin, Phoebe, Theodore, Margaret, Mary, Floyd, and Robert.
