Death Saturday followed in the wake of what a few days before had promised to be the best fishing of Fred Zanello’s holiday.
Zanello retired Portland contractor who built the labor temple and many large apartment houses, thought of the fisherman’s gods were all with him last Wednesday when in half an hour he hauled in three large salmon from the Columbia near Megler. As the 59-year-old contractor landed his third fish, he fell forward, stricken by a heart attack. With him in the boat were Elmer Strandberg and Roy Eldridge of Portland.
He was rushed to the Astoria hospital by the coast guard, dying there Saturday.
Born in Portland in 1885, Zanello is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mabel Zanello; one son, Jack Zanello, Redding, Cal.; a granddaughter, Joan Zanello, Portland, and two sisters, Mrs. James Hefty and Mrs. William Wright, also of Portland.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Wednesday at Finley’s chapel, with interment at Riverview cemetery. Pallbearers will be Judge Martin Hawkins, Ernest Graham, Herb Wallace, Oscar Wayman, Glenn Horde and Bert Ebling.
