JOSEPH BENNETT RITES SET; LITTLE LEAGUE PIONEER
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Foster Memorial United Presbyterian Church for Joseph A. Bennett, 70, of 4234 Euclid Blvd., retired businessman and a pioneer in Little League baseball who died of a heart ailment at 4:15 a.m. Friday in South Side Hospital.
Mr. Bennett was born June 4, 1906, in Williamsport, Pa., a son of George W. and Loretta Caselberry Bennett and came to Youngstown in 1932 from Marrisburg [Harrisburg], Pa.
He served as a vice president of the Wellman Realty Co. five years, and prior to that was employed by the Ohio Edison Co., worked for Packard Electric Div. during World War II, sold appliances for Strouss for 12 years, and operated his own appliance store on Market Street.
He was a member and trustee of the church, a charter member, and first president of the Uptown Kiwanis Club, a member of the Organization of Protestant Men and Curbstone Coaches. He was active in bringing Little League baseball to Youngstown and was an avid YSU athletic fan.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Davis-Velker Funeral Home. The body will lie in state in the church one hour prior to services.
The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the endowment fund of the Youngstown YMCA.
