Obituary - 1 January 2015 - San Diego Union Tribune

John D. Bentz, 97, of San Diego. Born Spencer, NE, 1917. Worked for GM Parts Div., starting as a laborer in 1939, becoming Director of Field Operations in 1970. Served in WWII as a Navigator on B-17 Bombers, awarded the Air Medal, 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, European Theater Medal, and the Victory Medal and flew 35 missions. Married Edna Meyer of Omaha, in 1945. He retired to San Diego in 1979, was active in church work as well as the S.D. Genealogical Society and the German Research Assn and published several books on his German ancestors. He died peacefully on Dec. 24. He is survived by four children, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

2nd LT Bentz served in the 334th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bomb Group (H), of the 8th United States AAF. He also trained as 9301-Intelligence staff officer, combat (G-2, A-2, S-2),
