BESSIE ALLEN DIES SUDDENLY

Little Daughter of Captain and Mrs. A. H. Allen Passes Away

Bessie Allen, who would have been 9 years old Sunday, daughter of Captain and Mrs. A. H. Allen, passed away at the family home at 431 Euclid avenue Tuesday night at 11 o'clock after a brief and mystifying illness.

Two weeks before her death she had submitted to an operation for the removal of her tonsils but had made a complete recovery, according to her physician's report.

Last week she was in Hope visiting with her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Knapp. While in Hope she was vaccinated for smallpox and when the vaccination failed to "take" as rapidly as it should she was again vaccinated. Both vaccinations "took" at the same time but apparently suffered no ill effects from these.

Saturday morning she complained of a headache and her mother went to Hope and brought her home. She was not feeling very well but was in sufficiently good spirits to attend the carnival Saturday evening.

Sunday her condition became slightly worse and gradually became more menacing until the end came. While an exact diagnosis has not been made, it is thought that her illness was a form of meningitis. Her throat was first touched by paralysis and this condition extended into her lungs and caused her death.

Bessie was born in Sandpoint in 19121 when her father was associated here with his brother, H.S. Allen, in the Allen Brothers drug store, and she was preparing to re-enter school here this week, after the summer vacation.

Bessie Allen was a particularly bright and sweet child. She was advanced beyond her years in her school work and was preparing to enter fourth grade at the Washington school this week.

A happy, sunshiney, disposition won her the affections of all with whom she came in contact. Her untimely and sudden death has cast a gloom over the neighborhood where this rear little flower grew. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved parents.

The funeral was held privately from the Allen residence on S. Euclid at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Dr. William Westwood, pastor of the local Presbyterian church officiated; interment was made in the cemetery in Hope, the Allen's former home to which the remains were taken in the motor hearse of the Pugh Funeral home.
