Julia Ruth Seiberling was the youngest of nine siblings born to John F. and Catherine Miller Seiberling. Her oldest brother was Franklin Augustus Seiberling, founder of Goodyear Rubber Co.

Ruth’s father, John F. Seiberling, was the head of the Akron, Ohio Street Railroad, the Canton Street Railway, the Zanesville Street Railway and the Akron Car Co. All were city trolley companies in the early 1890s. He was a prominent inventor and industrialist and also headed the Empire Reaper Works and was active in the famous Quaker Oats Co. Mr. Seiberling was the inventor and manufacturer of Seiberling streetcar trucks and had hundreds of other patents. He also headed several other companies in the Akron, Ohio area and was active in the Valley Railroad, which was later part of the B&O.

Ruth married Ernest Andrew Pflueger in 1896. Four sons were born to their marriage : John, Theodore, William, and Robert. All of their sons were given the middle name Seiberling.
