Lawrence Frank Ballinger, 88, of Winfield, Kansas formerly Wichita, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, January 23, 2015 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Born August 29, 1926 in Protection, Kansas, he was the son of Frank Walter And Blance Ann (Harmon) Ballinger. He was raised and received his education in Pratt, Kansas, graduating from Pratt High School.

Larry enlisted in the United States Army on November 21, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre and Europe during WWII. He received an honorable discharge on November 20, 1946. He then re-enlisted and served during the Korean Conflict. He was again, honorably discharged on June 1, 1953.

Mr. Ballinger owned and operated Larry’s 66 Service Station in Wichita. He later worked for the State of Kansas as a Driver’s License Examiner for ten years. He worked for various companies as a security guard and a delivery driver.

He was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and as a young man, driving race cars.

His family includes: His guardian and long-time friend: Mary Ann Ireland of Wichita; His brother: John Ballinger of Tulsa, OK; His sister: Dorothy Winfrey of Canada; His children: Robert and Laura; His step-daughter-in-law: Janet Weidenheimer; and Several grandchildren, step grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his step-son, Rick Weidenheimer, his brother, Kenneth Ray Ballinger, and his sisters, Laura Frances Ballinger and Margaret Self.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield.

A Memorial has been established in Larry’s name for the Semper Fi Fund to help Wounded Warriors. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
