George Barclay was born in Norfolk, Virginia to Solomon Tatem Barclay (1818-1874) and Johanna Dickson Barclay (1826-1880). He was one of 12 children. He came to Globe, Arizona in 1881 and soon went into the cattle business with his brother-in-law, A.G. Pendleton. They operated a successful ranch business for 10 years before selling out and establishing a livery, feed and sales stable. He was elected a member of the Gila County Board of Supervisors several times during the state's territorial days. He also served as mayor of Globe for two terms, in 1914 and 1916. He was a charter member of Rescue Lodge No. 12, I.O.O.F. He retired in 1942 and moved to Phoenix, where he resided until his death. He was survived by his wife, Lillie.
