BRISTOL, Tenn. – Haskel "H.B." Arrington, 91, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 16, 1913, on a farm in Cannady, Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late Newborn H. and Sarah Duty Arrington. He attended a one-room school and, upon graduation from Paw Paw Elementary School, stayed on the farm for two years, helping his father farm and buys and sells cattle. He was on his father's checking account when he was 12 years old, and he could buy a cow, pay for it and drive the cow home. When he got 25 to 30 cattle, he and his father, with the help of two dogs, would drive the cattle to Carbo, a distance of 22 miles, where the cattle were weighed, loaded on a coal car and sold.

He then entered Haysi High School, staying one year with his brother, the late William Arrington, one year walking and riding a horse eight miles, and two years with Dr. and Mrs. Doc Sutherland. After accompanying Mr. Akers (A.M.) west, the agriculture teacher, to Blacksburg on a livestock judging team for three summers, Mr. Arrington won the judging team contest. He attended V.P.I. on an agriculture scholarship. He planned to be a school teacher, but upon his return to Haysi, he was offered a job with Cumberland Bank and Trust Company in Clintwood. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Sutherland, in 1937, and lost her in 1938.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1940, trained recruits in Georgia, and in 1942, Joined the Counter Intelligence Corps. Upon being honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to banking. He served the bank as president and chief executive officer until his retirement in 1978, and then moved to Bristol.

In 1980, he organized Dickenson-Buchanan Bank for the people of Dickenson County and Buchanan County, which he sold in 1990. In addition to serving on the boards of Cumberland and Dickenson-Buchanan County Banks, he served on the board of Dominion Bank shares. He was also president and owner of Haysi Insurance Agency, Haysi Coal Docks and C. & A. Coal Company. He had 25 years perfect attendance in the Haysi Kiwanis Club, served one year as Kiwanis lieutenant governor, and was presented a life membership in Kiwanis International in 1977.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner for over 70 years, served 15 years as a member of and was chairman of the Dickenson County School Board, 20 years as a member of the board of Breaks Interstate Park and was on the boards of Bristol University and the University of Virginia at Wise. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree in commercial science and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church in Bristol. His wife of 51 years, Julia C. Arrington, passed away in 1999.

Mr. Arrington is survived by four daughters, Sue Arrington of Abingdon, Martha Farmer and her husband Jack of Bristol Virginia, Elizabeth Arrington and her husband Wayne Fowler of Douglasville, Ga., and Patricia (Teresa) Bacon and her husband Randy of Jonesborough; a special grandson, David M. Arrington, and grandsons, Scott Farmer and Bradley and Brandon Bacon; and a great- granddaughter, Sarah Farmer.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and from 6 until 9 o'clock Wednesday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 o'clock Thursday in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Hayes, Rev. Lester MacKinnon and Rev. David Harr officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by Elizabeth Arrington and Masonic Memorial Rites will be conducted by Shelby Lodge 162, as a courtesy to Clintwood Lodge 66. The committal service and interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, with Elder Bob Arrington Officiating. Military graveside rites will be presented by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be John E. Arrington, C.G. Edwards, Richard Edwards, Bill Edwards, Mike Ratliff, Jerry D. Sutherland and Wayne Necessary. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Arrington, Harold Powers, Banner Sykes, Charlie "Chuck" Carrier, Jack Arrington, Bobby Arrington, George Wright, Lonnie Owens, David M. Haskell and Julia helped make the little coal mining town of Haysi, Virginia a much better place. Their many involvements in community projects and organizations was major.
