Son of William and Rebecca (Mathews) Bird. Married first to Ruth Spitznas (divorced) and afterward to Nyda West. Father of Roger Bird.
Bird served the shortest term of any Akron Mayor - just six months. He took over the helm of the city on June 30, 1953 to complete the term of Mayor Charles Slusser, who had stepped down after accepting a national post.
Bird, a Republican, had served as sixth ward councilman for two terms, beginning in 1945, and served as councilman-at-large in 1951.
Prior to his journey into politics he owned and operated a drug store and soda fountain in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood of Akron.
Bird's term as mayor expired Dec. 31, 1953, and Bird went on to resume his former post of councilman. He later served as Clerk of the Akron Municipal Court and Summit County Sheriff.
