Charles Edward Steger (Private (later Corporal), Company D, 56th Virginia Infantry, CSA) was in General Richard Brooke Garnett's Brigade during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg
"Charles R [sic] Steger. The foremost man in the great charge of Pickett's Division at Gettysburg except the gallant Lieutenant-Colonel Rawley Martin, of another regiment who wears that distinguished honor. Charles R. [sic] Steger was sitting straddle of a cannon on the heights cheering with all his might, and states that the Federal army had commenced to retreat when he was grabbed in the collar and jerked down..."
