Earl (Ray) Allton was born in the living room of the family home 7 1/2 miles South East of Harper, KS in Pilot Knob Township. He attended Pilot Knob School for the first 8 years of his schooling. His mother drove him and his two older brothers(Elmer and Leon) to school in a horse drawn buggy until he was older and he either walked or rode a horse. He graduated high school from Harper High School and later attended Pittsburg State University for one year majoring in Commerce. After marrying Mildred Chloie Allton on 16 April, 1938 he went into partnership with his father and manged the farm until Walter's death on 21 June, 1938. Afterwards he continued to manage the farm for his mother and brothers until retiring from farming in 1972.

Ray was dubbed "The Little Digger" by a hired man because he was always so willing to help in any way he could. As a man, he put in long hours working his plumbing job and farm. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed vacationing and 4H Leadership with his children (Iris Kay, Kent Ray, Genile Dee, Glenna Diane and Nila Jean). He enjoyed the county fair every year and participated as a superintendent for various departments. He was honored in his retirement when asked to be the Grand Marshal for the fair parade.

Ray was 80 years old upon his retirement from his plumbing job and missed working very much. But, he was blessed with many many wonderful friends down through the years as well as his family. They all remember him fondly.
