Mr. Charles T . Canto, 81, of Methuen,Mass, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Caritas Holy Family Hospital in Methuen following a long illness.

Born in Lawrence, Mass, son of the late Michaelangelo and Rose (Margherita) Canto, he graduated from Lawrence High School with the Class of 1942.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Canto served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the rank of corporal and was a recipient of The Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two clusters.

He saw service in the China, Burma, India theatres with over 1000 hours of flight over the Himalayan Mountains.

After graduating from the Massachusetts Radio and Telegraph School in 1946 he worked as a radio technician at station WCCM in Lawrence.

Mr. Canto was appointed a deputy sheriff for Essex County in 1964 by the late Sheriff Roger E. Wells and continued to serve in that capacity for 35 years under four successive sheriffs. He was also a process server for Essex County with offices formerly located in the Baystate Building in Lawrence.

He was appointed a court officer of the Lawrence Superior Court and also served many years in the Probate and Family Courts of Justice Albert Pettoruto, Justice Francis Mayo, Justice Haskell Freidman, Justice Edward Rockett and retired as senior court officer from the Court of Justice Mary McCauley Manzi in 2000.

Mr. Canto was named Court Officer of the Year in 1971 and was also presented with the Liberty Bell Award by the Lawrence Bar Association during Law Day ceremonies in 1998.

A longtime member of St. Lucy's Parish, he served as an usher and collector for many years. He was also a member and past president of both the Sargent Improvement Club and the Montauk Social Club. He was a member of the Italian American Civic Association, the Lawrence Lodge of the Sons of Italy, a Third Degree member of the Methuen Council #4027 of the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the World War II Memorial and a member of the Board of Directors of Undercover Wear, Inc. He was also a member of the former Holy Rosary Parish of Lawrence.

The husband of Adrienne (Kouvelas) Canto, to whom he was married for 55 years until her death on April 11, 2004, he was survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Marguerite R. and Walter J. Jamitkowski, Jr.(Tiffany and Walter James) of Honolulu, Hawaii, Charlene J. and Francis J. Berube, Jr. of Plaistow, NH, and Christine C. Canto-Kalman and Stephen I. Kalman of Andover, grandchildren, Walter J." Jamie" Jamitkowski, III, and his wife Cheryl, of North Andover, Gregory F. Berube of New York City, Kevin M. Berube, Melissa M. Berube, Monica N. Berube, all of Plaistow, Taryn E. Kalman and Kierstyn E. Kalman, of Andover, a great-grand-daughter, Niccie M.J. Jamitkowski of North Andover, brother Salvatore Canto of Hampton, NH, sisters, Constance Platania, of North Andover, Cora Diodati and her husband William of Methuen and Marie Palmer, of Manchester, NH, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
