Harold Bostelaar was the son of Joseph Bostelaar and Nellie Breel. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1941 and was inducted into the Army in Nov 1942. While serving as private first class in the Army infantry during WWII in the south pacific he was wounded at Bougainville near New Hebrides which resulted in the loss of a leg. He was awarded the silver star and the purple heart. After a recovery and returning home, he was married to Anna M. Smith and they had 2 children.
Mr. Bostelaar graduated from Davenport Institute and was an employee of the Remington Rand division of the Sperry Rand Corp. working in sales and bookkeeping.

Pfc. Harold Bostelaar was awarded the silver star by Maj. Gen. O.W. Griswold for gallantry in action on Bougainville on Mar 11, 1944. Pfc. Bostelaar is credited with having fought off a counter-attack by the Japanese in overwhelming odds, while all other troops and wounded were being withdrawn and the enemy repulsed. He was severely wounded in the leg in the action, for which he received the purple heart.
