Robert L. McAloon of Mashpee and Naples, Fla., a former fidelity and surety bond manager, died Tuesday of natural causes at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was 80.Born in Taunton, Mr. McAloon was a longtime resident of Mashpee and Naples, Fla.

He was educated at Coyle High School and graduated from Stonehill College in Easton in 1949, earning a bachelor of science degree in business.

Mr. McAloon enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1953, and achieved the rank of second lieutenant. He was released from active duty in September 1955 but remained in the reserves. Mr. McAloon was discharged in 1962.

In September 1955, Mr. McAloon began a lifelong career with Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. He held many positions at the company, ending his career as the fidelity and surety bond manager for the Boston office. During his time at the company, he was certified as a chartered property casualty underwriter, and later taught courses at Northeastern University in Boston. He retired in 1989 after 38 years with the company.

In his retirement, Mr. McAloon continued to consult for several area construction companies, including R.H. Griffin Construction of Peabody.

He was deeply involved in the affairs of St. Margaret's Church in Brockton, representing the church in the Interfaith Council, and volunteering in various parish activities, including its religious education program. He made Cursillo and became a regular presence during the 1970s at the Holy Cross Retreat House at Stonehill College.

Mr. McAloon is survived by his wife of 27 years, Evelyn (Stead); two sisters, Mary LeVasseur of East Taunton and Ann Mador of Chatham; a brother, Joe of Sperry, Ga.; five children and their spouses, Kathleen M. Convey and her husband Kevin R. of Brockton, Timothy P. and his wife Barbara Isola of Quincy, Matthew F. and his wife Laura MacLean of Weymouth, Michael J. and his wife Lynn of Cantwell, Alaska, and Daniel R. and his wife Michelle of Newtown, Conn.; and 10 grandchildren, Robert and Catherine of Quincy, Eamon and Mairead of Brockton, Jessica, Patrick and Jonathan of Weymouth, and Logan, Owen and Cole, of Newtown, Conn. He was the husband of the late Joan, and brother of the late Francis.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. tomorrow at the church of the Parish of Christ the King, Mashpee.

Private burial will be held at a later date.

The family requests that donations be made to the Toys for Tots Program, c/o Marine Corp League of Naples, P.O. Box 8982, Naples, Fla., 34101, in lieu of flowers.
