LOCAL BANK ROBBER REPORTED SLAIN

RUFUS McCAIN IS STABBED BY
ALCATRAZ FELON

Body Being Sent To Idabel
For Funeral Rites

Death, which an Oklahoma federal district judge said should have been assessed by a jury, Tuesday caught up with Rufus McCain, 37 years old, who was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the robbery of the Idabel National bank and the subsequent kidnaping of two bank employes here.
McCain, according to reports received here, was stabbed fatally in Alcatraz federal prison by another convict, whose name was not learned, who waylaid him in the prison tailor shop to settle an old grudge.
When a Durant jury fixed McCain's penalty, Robert L. Williams, then federal district judge, rebuked it for not condemning McCain to death.
"In the next robbery, a son or daughter of one of you jurors may be taken as hostage," he said. Sam Day, a companion of McCain, was killed in the robbery, which happened in Idabel on May 14, 1935.
In the gun struggle which waged in the center of the business section here, Day was shot three times in the right shoulder by buck shot. Day later died from injuries.
Unmasked, the two men entered the bank about 1:15 in the afternoon. Chester O'Neal, cashier, looked up and recognized McCain instantly. McCain yelled, "This is a holdup--stick up your hands."
As the bandits prepared to leave, after obtaining a loot amounting to $2,700, Day told O'Neal and Bryant Clegg, "Come on, we're taking you with us."
As the men left the bank, they ordered Clegg to lead the way.
Armed citizens, who heard of the robbery while it was in progress, were waiting outside. They staged a gun fight with the bandits, who finally gave up and were carried away to the county jail.
McCain and Day had walked away from the Tucker prison farm in Arkansas only three weeks previous to the robbery here.
McCain's body will arrive in Idabel Saturday afternoon via the Frisco railroad, according to information received by the dead man's father, J.N. McCain, Broken Bow, late Tuesday. The body is being shipped here from San Francisco, Calif.
The Coffey Funeral home of Idabel will be in charge of the funeral arrangements.
McCain is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. McCain, Broken Bow; two sisters, Mrs. K.M. Parmer, Shreveport, La., and Mrs. John Roby, Broken Bow; six brothers, Fleak McCain, Boswell; Newt McCain, Magnolia, Ark.; Lawrence McCain, Bob McCain, Gus McCain and Jimmie McCain, Broken Bow.
Three half-sisters also survive, including Mrs. Martha Dickey, California; Mrs. Nina Cress and Mrs. Imogene Farley, Broken Bow.
Rufus was the eighth of ten children born to James Newton and Nancy E. 'Nan' (Nelson) McCain.
