John J. Abel
Age 82, of Canton, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Meadow Wind Health Care Center. He was born on June 9, 1927 in New Philadelphia, Ohio to the late John E. and Leota Abel and had resided in Canton most of his life. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Japan Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed as a steel loader by the Timken Company for 38 years, retiring in 1989. John was a member of the Eleventh Street Church of God and the Timken Retiree's Club. He was formerly active with the Boy Scouts and served as a scout master and was past president of the Lohr School PTA.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Schaar and brother, Edgar Gotshall.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Evelyn (Swigert) Abel to whom he was married for 61 years. John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park.
