Anna Avil Stribling was born August 30, 1936 to Donald and Elisabeth Avil. She was a proud resident of Avondale Estates for most of her life and shared many good times with friends and neighbors there. A fierce athlete and talented craftsperson, Anna loved to play tennis and golf, work puzzles, refinish antiques, arrange flowers and be with her many beloved pets. A member of the Decatur High School's Class of 1954, she maintained many of her high school friendships late into life, joining in class reunions and beach trips. She attended Agnes Scott College to study art history until Emory student Charles Hudson Stribling swept her off her feet. They married in 1957 in Decatur. Anna set about building a loving home and was the chief architect of happy childhoods for their four children. They built a new home in Stone Mountain that became favored by the kids' friends and was known as the place where Anna would give you a free haircut, fix you a yummy sandwich and let you sleep in the "Queen's bed," one of the many beautiful antiques she collected. The Frazier Center, Junior League of Dekalb, Egleston Children's Hospital and Decatur Presbyterian Church were among the organizations where Anna spent many volunteer hours helping others. As empty nesters, she and Charlie informally adopted a family that had fled Vietnam and helped support them through the tragic loss of a child. Anna's nurturing reached many. Anna Avil Stribling, age 75, died peacefully at home in Avondale Estates on July 5th, 2012 after a long illness. She is survived by: husband Charles Hudson Stribling; sister Betty Avil Almand (Andrew); children Ashley McLaughlin (Don) of Birmingham AL, Suzanna Stribling (Robert Rubin), Robert Stribling (Heather) and Reeves Stribling (Cheryl); grandchildren Wesley, Charles and Reed McLaughlin; Lucy, Anna Grace and Alan Whitehead; Jessica Allen, Emily and Sam Stribling; and Jason and Sylvia Stribling. Visitation will be Sunday, July 8th from 5 to 7 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur. Services will be held at Decatur Presbyterian Church Monday, July 9th at 10:30 am with a graveside service to follow at Decatur Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to the Atlanta Humane Society, 981 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Anna's amazing caregiver, Robin Lovelace, to former son-in-law Robin Whitehead, to all her caring Avondale neighbors, and to Bailey Pendergrast and hospice nurse Allyson Zalva for helping her at life's end.
