"On the 4th inst., in the 78th year of his age, RICHARD C. DERBY, Esq. {Boston and Newport, R. I. papers will please copy.}"

The Philadelphia Inquirer. 6 April 1854

"Your paper of the 4th, gives notice of the death of RICHARD C. DERBY, Esq., a gentleman, well and extensively known to many of our citizens.

Mr. Derby was a native of Salem, Mass., for many years a resident of Boston, and for some time past of Newport, R. I. At this place his beautiful and tastefully adorned cottage has been the hospitable receptacle of the many who visit that well know place.

To a fine education, a well cultivated mind, a bright and joyous temperament, in Mr. D. were united, a classic taste for all the fine arts, embracing music, painting and sculpture, and the adornment of his cottage were in strict accordance with all the refinements of these arts, as hundreds of visitors will attest. At his hospitable board, the pleasures of the table were accompanied by sparkling with refined taste and cheerful converse.

Mr. D. united to some eccentricities of character, a keen and penetrating knowledge of human nature, and rarely was he known to have failed in his estimate of, or selection of friends.

His love for music continued to the last, and but an hour before he expired, requested his family to play some favorite piece. He was interred at St. James-the-Less, a spot chosen by himself and in compliance with his Will no funeral pomp should be exhibited, no procession follow him to the grave. A few friends witnessed the last sad and solemn service, and his body was deposited in the same unostentatious manner in which he had lived. D."

"THE LATE RICHARD C. DERBY.
This gentleman, who will be remembered by many of our citizens, died in Philadelphia on Tuesday, 4th inst., in the 78th year of his age. He has resided at Newport, Rhode Island, during the last few years of his life.

Mr. Derby was a native of Salem. He made in early life the tour of Europe, and during repeated visits to the continent cultivated a taste for music, statuary and painting, which for the last half century has made his house the resort of strangers and men of genius.

His remains have been deposited in the rural cemetery of St. James-the-Less, near Philadelphia, pursuant to the directions of a will. He leaves many legacies to friends and relatives, and the following bequests to public charities in Boston: To the Boston Farm School, $5000; to the Boston Female Orphan Asylum, $2500; to Rev. John T. Sargent, of Boston, for distribution among the poor, $5000.

Frank and cordial in his manners and benevolent in his disposition, many will remember him with gratitude.-Boston Transcript.
