E. W. Sells Dies After A Stroke
New York Accountant Was Born in Muscatine
Recognized As One of Leaders in That Field – Son of Elijah
Elijah Watt Sells, senior partner of Haskins & Sells, public accountants of New York City, a former Muscatin resident, died Wednesday night, March 19, at his apartment in New York as a result of a stroke he suffered last fall.

Mr. Sells’ family was well known in Muscatine during the period following the civil war. He was born here March 1, 1858, the son of Elijah Sells, at various times secretary of the state of Iowa and auditor of the treasury department under President Lincoln. Two daughters survive him, Mrs. Arthur H. Carter and Mrs. LeRoy D. Morris.

Another of Five Books
Mr. Sells was a member of many prominent organizations in New York. He was the author of “Corporate Management Compared to Government control,” Publicity of Financial Affairs of Corporations,” Advertising as a Business Asset,” Advertising as an Investment or an Expense,” and “Plans for International Peace.”

His early accounting experience was gained in connection with various railroad lines as general bookkeeper and traveling auditor. In 1892 Mr. Sells joined the late Charles Waldo Haskins in effecting a revision of the accounting system for the United States government. At the conclusion of his labors he was accorded official recognition by the fifty-third congress of his ability as an expert accountant.

Pioneer Accountant
In 1895 Mr. Sells entered into co-partnership with Mr. Haskins as Haskins & Sells, certified public accountants, now with offices in nearly all principal cities of the United States and in European cities. Following the death of Mr. Haskins in 1903, Mr. Sells was head of the firm and took an active part in its management until a few months ago. In 1908 he made an investigation of the financial system of the Philippine Islands.

Mr. Sells was one of the pioneers of the accountancy profession. (Muscatine Journal and News Tribune, Muscatine, IA, March 22, 1924)
