LEAKEY TEXAS—Chris Leo Hernandez, 51, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 in League City, Texas. He was born June 13, 1959 in Galveston, Texas.

Chris retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after many years of service. In spite of having a lifelong debilitating bone disease, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, which caused him to suffer hundreds of broken bones, and countless surgeries, he always demonstrated courage and tenacity. He lived his life as normal as he could, knowing that his next broken bone and surgery could be right around the corner.

In 2000, Chris made his home in Leakey, Texas where he met many kind and generous folks, especially Ms. Alene Newton, and a very special couple, Jimmy and Tammy Albarado who embraced Chris as a special friend and stood by him to the end.

Chris is preceded in death by his parents, Jackie and Rudy Hernandez; aunts Phyllis Boutwell and Josi Simmons; uncles Mike Boutwell and Johnny, Ralph, Frank, and Santos Hernandez. He is survived by his sister Annette H. Martinez and her husband Sam; nieces Abigail and Andie Martinez, aunts Bobbi La Fond of League City and Mary Edwards of Georgetownand her husband Jim; companion Patricia Newton of Leakey; and numerous cousins.

The family would like to thank those who spoke kind words, offered support, prayer and care, especially to Kendle and Robert and Dr. Grumbles at the Hospice Care Team and his countless angels at Regent Care Center, especially Jennifer, George, Ginger and Tina.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sarah Hrachovina-Coreas Fund, BBVA Compass Bank, 6306 Broadway, Galveston, Texas 77551. Phone 409-744-4571. Due to a crash by a drunk driver, Sarah is in a coma. She has a one year old precious daughter, Naomi.
