Son of Reverend Thoman C. Carman and Phebe C. Pruden. Obtained his B. A. from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1884, and a Masters in 1886. He was a Fellow of Experimental Science at the University of Berlin, Germany 1887-1889, Universities of Vienna and Berlin 1895-1896. He was an instructor of physics at Princeton 1883-1884 and a tutor of math 1885-1887. From 1888-1892 he was a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at Purdue University and Professor of Theoretical Physics at Stanford from 1892-1896. In 1896 he became Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana.

He married Maude Wheeler Straight on June 21, 1900. (Note: There is a Maude Straight Carman buried in Ohio, married to John Carman. This is not the same person.)
