Soverhill was born in Fulton township, Rock county, the son of Myron H. and Adeline (Sanford) Soverhill. He began his adult work farming, but later moved to Janesville and engaged in the tobacco trade. In 1886 he began buying and selling and packing tobacco, shipping it throughout the United States. In addition, he was president of the People's Coal Company, of Janesville, and a director of the Monarch Mining, Developing & Reduction Company of Grant, New Mexico.

November 23, 1883, Mr. Soverhill married Miss Anna G., daughter of Isaac and Anna (McNall) Porter of Cooksville, Rock county. They raised four children, Cora, Laila, Edith and Wilna.
