Major League Baseball Player. For seventeen seasons (1975 and 1977 to 1992), he played at the first baseman and outfielder positions, in addition to designated hitter with the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers. Born David Bruce Bergman, he attended Maine South High School in Illinois and played collegiate baseball at Illinois State University. He achieved All-American status in 1974. Selected by the Yankees during the 2nd round of the 1974 Amateur Draft, he marked his Major League debut with New York on August 26, 1975. After he was acquired by Houston, he saw increased playing time and produced a .333 batting average during the 1980 National League Championship Series. He experienced a world championship with the 1984 Detroit Tigers' squad. In 1,349 regular season games, he compiled 690 hits with a lifetime .258 batting average. After retiring from baseball, he operated a financial consulting business. He died following a three-year battle with cancer.
