When HENRY CLAY PETTUS was born enslaved, the son of his white master by the name of Stephen Garland Pettus Jr (also spelled Pettis) and his enslaved mother Sophia Hudson, on February 1853 (or 1856) in Wilkes County, Washington, Georgia. His father, Stephen, was 29 and his mother, Sophia, was 21. He married Mary Russell (born 1875) and they had five children together between 1891 and 1904. He also had four living sons with the 1st Mrs. Pettis (borm abt 1856). The first Mrs. Pettis, name unknown, died in childbirth in the 1880s. Rev. Henry Clay Pettus(Pettis) became a distinguished minister of the Marianna AME Church and a prosperous landowner, very much respected by both white and black citizens of Marianna, Arkansas. He died in 1950 in Marianna, Arkansas, at the age of 97. Rev. Pettus and his wife Mary Russell Pettus had one daughter born on December 11, 1902 whose name is Ida Mae Pettus (married Rev. Robert E. Herndon). Her daughter is my beautiful mother Dorothy Mary Herndon.
