Kayla Jean Mueller, 26, an American humanitarian worker, was rumored to have died in Syria, c. 2014, or 2015, after having been captured August 4, 2013, and then held prisoner by militants of the terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL a.k.a. ISIS). ISIS claimed that Mueller died Friday, February 6, 2015, as a result of Jordanian airstrikes on Raqqa, Syria, retaliation for the brutal execution of an Jordanian fighter pilot captured by ISIS. American intelligence and law enforcement agencies were working on a theory based on prior intelligence indicating Mueller died weeks, or months prior to the airstrike.
