Obituary:
Ellen Hillyer Newell Bryan died Monday, June 1, 1998.
Mrs. Bryan attended the Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens, Washington Seminary and Sweet Briar College. She was the widow of William Wright Bryan, the editor of the Atlanta Journal and the Cleveland Plain Dealer and later vice president of Clemson University. Mrs. Bryan was active for more than 60 years in the Girl Scouts - she was commissioner of Atlanta Girl Scouts in the 1930s, elected to the National Board of Directors for many years and the first board member emeritus elected to the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council, which recently named a lake in her honor.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Revs. Frank M. McClain, Martha Mercure and George Alexander officiating. Burial will be in historic Oakland Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Newell Bryan Tozzer, Atlanta, and Marylane Sullivan, Cleveland, Ohio; a son, William Wright Bryan Jr., Atlanta; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
