Albert enlisted in the Civil War in Paw Paw, Michigan, May 6, 1861, just weeks before his 26th birthday. His service record is as follows: “Enlisted in Company C, New York 70th Infantry Regiment on 21 Jun 1861. Mustered out on 21 Nov 1861 at Camp Farnum, MD.” Sadly, Albert was wounded in battle sometime in Nov. of that same year, and was sent to the Civil War Regimental Hospital, Camp Farnham, MD, where he died on Nov. 21st. The hospital record indicated he died of his wounds, and of “mania.” Albert was the loving young husband of his 2nd cousin, Mary C. Brown of New York. (Both were descended from the Starkweather family of Preston City, Connecticut, specifically Jesse Starkweather, a Revolutionary War hero.) He and Mary had two children: George Arthur Landphere, and Edith Emoline Landphere-Wedekind.
