DEATH OF OLIVER ARMSTRONG

the report of the death of the Hon. Oliver C. Armstrong reached this village Saturday afternoon, and our citizens were greatly shocked. His friends here had not learned of his illness, and they tried to make themselves think at first that there was some mistake about it. He was elected surrogate of Ontario county last November, and held his first term of court on the Tuesday before his death. Mr. Armstrong was born in Canadice in 1847. His early life was spent on his father's farm, and his education was obtained mainly from the district schools, but he finally graduated at the East Bloomfield academy. After leaving school be entered the law office of the Hon. Edwin Hicks of Canaudaigua and was admitted to the bar in 1877. He was a most ardent and active Republican, and entered into the political field early, doing great service for his party on the stump, being an entertaining and convincing speaker. In 1878 be was placed in the field as a candidate for district attorney but was defeated by a small vote. A second contest in 1881 resulted in his election, and his re-election followed in 1884. His duties in this capacity were discharged in a manner which won for him the approbation of all. In 1889 his party placed him in nomination for member of assembly. He was ambitious for this honor and made a strong fight, but was defeated by Mr. Abbey by a small majority. After this he retired somewhat from politics, but in 1891 he was elected surrogate, and was installed in his office at the beginning of the year. The deceased leaves an aged mother, a brother, a wife and two daughters, besides a host of friends, to mourn his sad taking away in the very prime of life. The people of Ontario county thought a great deal of Oliver Armstrong. He often came to Livonia to visit his brother James, the brothers having a great affection for each other. He was a man whose loss will be greatly deplored. The remains were brought here day before yesterday and buried in the Union cemetery by the side of his father and mother.
