The family surname was Möller in Norway; Americanized to Miller after emigration to the US.

Mathilde's birth is found at the Norwegian Digital Archives on Pg. 72 of the Parish Record for Levanger in Sor-Trondelag Norway for 1847. Just a few pages beyond her older sister Julie's birth record (Pg 60)

Her confirmation record appears on Page 100 of the Levanger parish records for 1863.

Her Norwegian birth record is one year later (1847) than the date on her tombstone (1846), which must be in error. Not unusual.

Read her mother, Elizabeth Miller's, memorial for more information on her parents and Norwegian heritage. Her middle name undoubtedly was given in honor of her paternal grandmother, Nicoline Katrine Bing.

She emigrated to America in 1869, along with her mother and three other siblings. One sister, Julia (m. Lyttle) had gone ahead to Wisconsin in 1866; a brother, Hans Ferdinand, emigrated in 1870 after his confirmation studies were completed.

Matilda had a total of (3) husbands (Williams, Baldwin, and Krause) and only one child, Jennie, who eventually married Adolph Swahn and lived in Ellsworth WI. She was also stepmother to husband Fred Krause's son, Fred C. Krause (m. Anna Busch).

1870 US Census - Lacrosse WI - Domestic Servant in the Smith household.

1880 US Census - Minneapolis (Hennepin County) MN, she is now named Matilda WILLIAMS and is shown living with her mother Elizabeth, sister Charlotte and Matilda's daughter Jennie WILLIAMS [b. about 1877]. Her occupation in 1880 is 'dressmaker'. She is either widowed or divorced from Mr. Williams, as he does not appear with the family on that census. They have married (or not?) between the 1870 and the 1880 censuses--probably closer to Jennie's birth in 1877.

However, on a later record, daughter Jennie (shown as Williams on the 1880 Census) used the maiden name of 'Baldwin' in her marriage record many years later when she married Adolph Swahn.

I have found a marriage record for a Martha Williams showing she married a man named Baldwin in 1881. This would be a second husband and likely the man who daughter Jennie thought of as a father as a young child.

1890 - Estimated marriage to Fred A. Krause. He is about 17 years older than she.

1900 US Census - Sioux Falls SD, m. Fred A. Krause, living with Fred C. and Anna (son and daughter-in-law) and also Jennie Baldwin, Matilda's daughter by a previous marriage.

1910 US Census - Sioux Falls SD., Matilda is married for about 20 years to Fred A. KRAUSE. Stepson Fred C. lives with them, as well as Matilda's sister Charlotte MILLER

Daughter Jennie: 1910 US Census for Neodosha, Kansas, shows Jennie E. Swahn and her husband of '0' years, Adolph Swahn, the manager of a glass factory (as noted in his obituary in his bio). They appear to have just been married less than one year at the time. The record shows that this is a first marriage for both--she is 35 and he is 38 years of age at the time.

The original marriage record can be found online at Ancestry.com under South Marriages for 1905-1949.

Jennie and Adolph Swahn never had children.
