Platte SD Obituary Mid Feb 1911
On Wednesday, February 1st, occurred the death of Mrs. D.H.Harris, at Viola, IL. She with her husband had been called there by the illness of Mrs. Sarah Williams, sister of Mr. Harris, and after having been there some six or eight days suffered an attack of the grippe, which lingered somewhat for five days, where she was apparently on the road to recovery, and took a sudden relapse and lived only fourteen to sixteen hours. The funeral and burial took place at Viola, on Monday, Feb 6th
The following members of the family and relatives were present: J.D. Harris of Delmont, Lew, Sadie, Henry and William of Platte, S.D., D.H.Harris, Maude and Mrs. E.A. Hoge of Weston, Oregon, Daniel Jones and wife of Correctionville, Iowa, William Jones, Wife and daughter of Red Oak, Iowa, and Richard jones and son Tom, of Lincoln, NE, Dave Williams of Preemption, IL, besides other members of the Williams family who live at viola, IL. Dan could not attend on account of just recovering from a severe sick spell and Matt could not on account of scarcity of time after receiving the message and the great distance he would have to travel from Seattle Wash. Where he now lives.
The casket was laden with flowers from the following friends: A large wreath of white and pink roses interwoven with ferns from the Williams family. A large spray of tulips and begonias from the Platte Presbyterian church. A bunch of white roses from the Acacia Chapter of the O.E.S. No. 63 of Platte, S.D. and spray of roses and carnations from the children at Platte who were unable to attend and the Epworth League. The children that were present besides procuring a large amount of assorted cut flowers had a pillow made of white and pink roses for-get-me-nots with small fern, and across the face of the pillow the word Mother printed with small letters made of small blue flowers.
Mrs. Harris was carried to her last resting place by the four sons and two of her brothers that attended the funeral. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Fisk, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Viola.
Mrs. Harris was born in Wales, Jan 25 1841, and came to the United States at the age of 8 years with her parents, who located near Coal Valley, IL was married to Mr. Harris in March 12, 1868. In 1882 she with her husband moved to Correctionville, Iowa, where they lived nearly 11 years and in 1893 moved to South Dakota, Charles Mix Co. where they lived until last fall she and Mr. Harris moved to Weston, Oregon, on account of poor health.
Mrs. Harris became a member of the Presbyterian Church when a young woman. After her marriage to D.H.Harris, she became a member of the Baptist Church of which he was a member, and has remained a member of that church ever since. Throughout her church life she has been a faithful Christian and always lived a loving, sympathetic, and self –denying life.
She was a kind and loving wife and mother, a true friend, and neighbor, and no woman ever lived in Platte, who had a higher place in the esteem of all than Mrs. Harris. Her death is not only a sad loss to the family left behind, but a large circle of friends who can testify to many acts of kindness at her hands.
We extend the deepest sympathy to the sorrowing husband, children, and other relatives
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to thank all who so graciously expressed their kindness and sympathy in our great sorrow and the loss of a dear, good, wife and mother.
