Shirley Gartin Swanson went home to with her Lord and Savior on February 12, 2015. Shirley passed away peacefully at her home while under Hospice care, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born January 10, 1933 to Harley and Maysel Gartin. Shirley grew up in the Chariton area with her two sisters, Connie and Eloise. She was an incredibly strong and hard working-woman, often working several jobs at a time to support her children. Shirley held many jobs throughout her life, including: working at the Country Chef with her two sisters; J.C. Penney’s; and Sears. Those who were blessed to have known Shirley were gifted with her selflessness, generosity, and her caring nature towards others. Shirley faced insurmountable adversities in her lifetime, particularly during the past three years with her deteriorating health. Shirley never complained about her hardships, even up to the time of her death.

In 1971 Shirley married Tom Swanson at the Chariton Methodist Church. They spent 43 wonderful years together. They enjoyed mushrooming, taking walks, playing cards with family and friends, fishing with the grandkids, and drinking a cold beer. Shirley especially enjoyed time spent at family reunions, with all of her cousins.

Left behind to mourn her passing is her loving husband, Tom; children, Jim (Marcy) of College Station, TX, Rich (Jackie) from Bussey, IA, Stacy (Steve) from Osceola, IA, and Jeff (Vicki) from Chariton, IA. Also are surviving are 4 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include her sister, Eloise Harvey; special sister and brother-in-laws, Linda and John; and in-laws, Betty and Tom Nelson. Shirley also leaves behind many caring and loving nieces and nephews, and her special furry friend, Doolittle.

Preceding Shirley in death were her parents; grandmother, Ella Roberts; grandson, Jimmy; sister, Connie Spiker; daughter-in-law, Linda Collins; and many special cousins.

Per Shirley’s request there will not be a funeral. A visitation will be held for family and friends on Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 1-3 pm at Fielding’s Funeral Home in Chariton. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested memorials be directed to: Chariton Library, Pinoak Marsh, or the HCI Care Services of South-Central Iowa.

The family would like to extend a special gratitude to the HCI Care staff for their loving and gentle care of Shirley the last weeks of her life.
